It makes me angry to hear about solo women being treated that way when making capital purchases. I have a hunch that stigma is slightly worse here in Utah than the godless west coast where I live.
As a professional salesman, I resent the lame-ass, unprofessional idiots that sell that way. Car dealers are notorious. They deserve to lose the business.
If you ever need a cable festoon, call me. I promise not to impugn your decision-making authority.
Being a guy, I cannot fully relate to what you had to go through though I do remember while growing up that my divorced mother had to go deal with similar crap. The closest I ever got was trying to buy my house when I was 20. Finding a real estate agent and a bank that would take me seriously was virtually impossible.
So, Utah, the home of sexism, ageism and I am sure someone has a similar story revolving around race.
I shudder to think what happens to a non-mormon trying to make a capital purchase in Utah county.
Ugh, that makes me ill. Every time I come back to Utah, I feel like my single status is constantly being rubbed in face. Why is it that my value as a women is based upon whether I am married nor not? I have never encountere this problem anywhere but Utah. This is just another reason why I'm grateful that I left.
welcome to utah! I guess the sad thing for me, is that I am not one bit surprised. its just a bed! its not like you are trying to sneak into the celestial kingdom.
uhm. ... i can't see why people are so upset about this. .. the majority of peeps your (our) age are married in the region. So you should expect salesmen to pander more to the marrieds. It's only natural.
But it's nothing that a simple, "nope, i'm single" doesn't resolve.
I've been in the situation i don't know how many times (and not just in Utah). I've never felt offended or judged. It happens, and it's easily taken care of.
Interesting how some of the 'minority' feel so offended in such simple situations though. Now if you assume the customer is part of the majority population but are wrong, you're a sexist and racist? hrm. methinks people should get out a bit more. You'll find these situations everywhere in the world.

That's the most depressing story. Its sad to think Utah is that judging of single shoppers. You'd think they'd just be thrilled with the commission.
Send a letter to the management at each store. It's worth a shot. Who knows maybe it won't happen to the next one in your situation.
I'm a Utah salesman and I would never discriminate against single women, I'd try and hit on them! If you need a new cell phone let me know!

Great column, Sarah!
I'm in desperate need of a new mattress too, but it's one of those things I'm going to put off as long as humanly possible.
I'm wondering if they'll ask for clearance from my non-existant wife before I make the purchase...
